We all know that meals with large amounts of white bread, pasta and rice is bad for your line, but now scientists have discovered that it can also affect your mental health.

A diet that is rich with carbohydrates from white bread, pasta and rice influences especially on postmenopausal women and contributes to the development of depression.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, studied data 70,000 women who participated in the Women’s Health Initiative between 1994 and 1998.

The results showed that women, who eat a lot of sugar, have a high glycemic index (GI) and higher risk of developing depression.

Women who are fed with healthy food had reduced risk of depression.

Scientists believe that refined foods can cause hormonal reactions in the body, leading to high blood sugar levels and euphoria, followed by a sudden drop of the energy.

Then occur, mood swings, fatigue and other symptoms of depression.
